Remember those rectangle things with paper in them that had words written on the paper? Ah yes! Books!

It seems that physical books are going way of the dodo, but when it comes to replacing them, the options are limitless! E-readers, or Electronic Readers, have been around since 2004. In their 13 years history, there have been several technological advancements made to improve readability and accessibly. If you’re on the fence about getting one, here are a few reasons that might sway you:

  1. FONT SIZE AND DISPLAY FEATURES:  All e-readers come standard with various options to change font, screen contrast, and brightness. It makes reading in the sunlight, or in dim light easier.  You can put away the magnifying glass now!
  2. BUILT IN DICTIONARY:  Stumped by a word you don’t recognize? No need to pull out the clunky Webster Dictionary anymore. Just put your finger on the word and the definition will pop up and you can continue reading.
  3. MONEY SAVER: While the initial purchase of an e-reader can be pricey, in the end, you’ll save money because generally e-books are cheaper than physical books.
  4. WEIGHT:  Have you ever picked up a hardcover copy of Ulysses? That thing is heavy and I wouldn’t want to schlep it to a coffee shop or park to read!  The average e-reader weighs less than a pound.
  5. STORAGE: Is your living room a library? No more room for new books?  Once you download a book onto your e-reader, it will remain in your digital library until you no longer want it.  That way, you can have access to tons more books without taking over your home.

Now that you’ve decided to buy an e-reader, here are a couple of sites that can help you figure out which one is best for you:

  • CNET: A reliable source for reviews of electronic devices.  A lot like Consumer Reports but free.
  • AARP: This outlines the pros and cons of several devices on the market.
  • Lifewire: An online resource to help you research, troubleshoot, and purchase electronic devices.

Once your e-reader has arrived, head to your local library (remember that place…the one with all of those rectangle things filled with paper?) to get some help setting it up and loading it up with new books.  Happy summer reading!
