SUMMARY:Beginner Pastels Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Students will become familiar with a brief history of the pastel medium\, ingredients used in manufacturing pastels\, pastel forms\, and the variety of pastel surfaces. Students will explore mark making\, color mixing and layering\, and pastel painting techniques through demonstration and hands on practice.  Students will develop self-confidence and utilize new skills through experimentation with various pastel materials and surfaces. \n  \n2 Week Workshop – \nMarch 18th & 25th \n10:00am – 12:00pm \nRobinson Building Art Room \nFee for 2 week workshop \n$50/JCC Members or AgeWell at the JCC Members – includes materials \n$75 Non-members – includes materials \nMaximum 14 participants per 2 week workshop \n  \nMeet the Artist \nFrancine Vandeberg’s lifelong interest and involvement in the arts is evident in her lively and enthusiastic teaching style.  She is a member of the Pittsburgh Society of Artists\, the Pittsburgh Watercolor Society and The Pittsburgh 10 Plus group of artists\, exhibiting at various Pittsburgh area galleries including Panza Gallery\, Boxheart Gallery\, The Gallery at Wilkins School Community Center and the Berger Gallery at the Jewish Community Center. She strives to capture a fleeting impression\, a feeling\, and enthusiastically creates art with pastels\, acrylics and watercolors. Francine encourages experimentation with materials and methods which leads to discovering one’s artistic vision and style.  She is inspired by a variety of subjects: landscapes\, seascapes\, scenes discovered while traveling\, wildlife and pets. \n

SUMMARY:Introduction to Watercolors & Exploring its Possibilities
DESCRIPTION:It doesn’t matter if you are a beginner or experienced artist.  These classes will be about the basic aspects of “how to do it”. \n  \nWatercolor\, a sometimes daunting mixture is a unique medium. In this class\, method and process will be the main focus as well as using materials to the best advantage. Color mixing\, drawing\, and composition will be discussed and demonstrated.  Because this class is in the winter and taking place indoors\, subject matter will include still life\, the figure and portraiture\, and interior space. \n  \n4 Week Course – January 29\, February 5\, 12\, & 19 (Wednesdays) \n9:30am – 12:00pm \nRobinson Building Art Room \n$125/JCC Members or AgeWell at the JCC Members – includes materials \n$150 Non-members – includes materials \nMaximum 10 Participants \n  \nMeet the Artist \nRobert Bowden is a painter of urban subjects whose style is to capture the cityscape with both intimacy and immediacy. His paintings are of subjects that engage him because of their color\, shape\, light effect\, surface interest or compositional potential. He is a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University\, College of Fine Arts\, Department of Painting and Design. His career as a graphic designer upon graduation was interwoven with the pursuit of painting. Early on his main interests were abstraction\, which evolved to realism as he developed an understanding of how to successfully use watercolor. Urban landscape painted en plein air is the major theme in his watercolor painting. Four books and three exhibition catalogs of his work have been published. His paintings are in four museum permanent collections as well as in numerous corporate and private collections.sha

He has performed with such diverse artists as Mel Torme\,\nRodney Dangerfield\, Michel LeGrande\, Gladys Knight and the Pips\,\nLiberace\, The Skyliners (featured on their hit record\, “Since I Don’t\nHave You”)\, Billy Eckstine\, Bobby Vinton and more. Ron is a\ncomposer and arranger and an adjunct professor at Duquesne\nUniversity. Ron is brought to us through the National Council on Aging and\nthe National Institute of Senior Centers’ MusicianFest Program.
